Newsletter-Autumn/Winter 04

The last few months have seen Outdoor Insights running a diverse range of training programs with our clients in some very different venues. These have included:-

Department of Infrastructure, Planning & Natural Resources-Aboriginal Support Unit.
The dry ‘moonscape’ landscape of the World Heritage Area listed Lake Mungo in the SW corner of NSW was the venue for a very different team skills and staff development program.

"The Mohawk Walk"
Outdoor Insights has worked with the Aboriginal Support Unit of the DIPNR (previously known as Department of Land and Water Conservation) a number of times in recent years and it was privilege to be invited back to run a two day program to support the themes of their conference in June this year.

Staying at the Mungo Lodge Resort some 120km dirt road drive north of Mildura, the conference started with a traditional ‘smoking’ ceremony conducted by the local tribal elders. This warm welcome helped highlight the cultural significance of this area to Aboriginal people and set the tone for the program.

A challenge for Outdoor Insights staff working in this harsh but beautiful bush landscape’ was to find large enough trees to erect the ‘low wire’ activities like the ‘Mohawk Walk’ and ‘Wild Woosey’! Other program activities included the ‘Fantastic Flying Machines’, which brought out the creative talents of the participants.

Repforce International
The start of the new financial year, rapid growth and organisational changes prompted leading specialist recruitment company Repforce International to request an Outdoor Insights training intervention in July.

Using the indoor and outdoor facilities of the Westpac College at Ingleside, Outdoor Insights stepped the participants through the Team Management Systems-Individual Profile to help them understand better, the work preferences of themselves and their colleagues. This theory was then supported with a range of outdoor experiential activities to highlight the behaviours of a ‘high performing ‘ team.

Luke Drummond, Senior Consultant with Repforce International wrote after the program: -

“All staff certainly finished the day with a better understanding of why team work is so important”.

“A great success overall!”

Department of Defence
Outdoor Insights long association with the IPP Branch of the Department of Defence was continued with a series of programs earlier in the year. Based in the Jervis Bay area, of the NSW South Coast, the first night was based at the unique “Paperbark Camp” where the participants were taken through some challenging team problem solving activities followed by a thorough business review and planning session.

Seak kayaking being used as part of a team development programThe second half of the program so a change of pace and a focus on teambuilding, as the group swapped their laptops for Expedition Sea kayaks! Using the relatively sheltered waters of St Georges Basin, the group were given instruction on kayaking skills, packed their belongings then journeyed to a secluded beach and camped for the night, cooking a gourmet Bbq dinner under the stars! The program concluded the next morning with team members having to navigate their kayaks back home.
